Mapping Wi-Fi Dead Zones with Apple RoomPlan

A Wi-Fi reading becomes much more useful when it remembers where in the house it was taken.

Most Wi-Fi tools give you a number. That number can tell you what the connection looked like at one instant, but the house is the part you actually need to debug. The useful question is not simply whether performance dropped. It is where the drop happened and how that place relates to everything around it.

Apple's RoomPlan SDK offered a way to make the house part of the measurement. RoomPlan can map a home as someone scans it. I built a prototype that measures Wi-Fi density and performance during that scan, with the goal of finding dead zones in the house.

The network reading now belongs to a place.

The problem is spatial

A Wi-Fi problem rarely describes itself in the language of a networking dashboard. It sounds like “video calls drop in this room” or “the connection gets bad near that corner.” Those descriptions contain location, but a standalone performance reading does not.

Walking through the space is already how people discover these problems. You carry a phone or laptop, watch the connection change, and try to remember where it became weak. That memory is an unreliable map. A floor plan without measurements has the opposite problem: it shows the space but says nothing about the network inside it.

The prototype joins those two views. The RoomPlan scan provides spatial context while Wi-Fi measurements provide the changing network signal. Instead of leaving the result as a list, the demo makes the scan itself the frame for understanding performance.

This is why the idea drew 2,093 bookmarks from 126,991 impressions. It turns a familiar household annoyance into something visible and inspectable without changing the way someone naturally investigates it: walk through the house and scan.

RoomPlan gives the measurement a place

RoomPlan is the interesting foundation because the scan is more than a background picture. It maps the home while the person moves through it. For a Wi-Fi mapper, that creates the possibility of attaching changing measurements to positions inside a representation of the same space.

The critical design question is coordinate alignment. A scan and a network sample have different meanings until the app can relate the sample to the scanner's position at that moment. Timing matters too: the measurement and the location need to refer to the same point in the walk closely enough to produce an honest map.

I kept the prototype deliberately narrow. It pairs RoomPlan's spatial scan with Wi-Fi density and performance readings while I move through the house. I did not benchmark coordinate accuracy or detail an interpolation method, so I treat the visual layer as a practical way to spot suspicious areas rather than a survey-grade map.

A map should not overstate the reading

Any visual network map has to decide what to do between samples. A device can only measure where and when it measures. A smooth region on screen may look authoritative even when it is an estimate across sparse readings.

That makes the display a product decision as much as a rendering decision. It should help someone see weak areas without implying more precision than the measurements support. Sample density, movement speed, temporary interference, and the device doing the scan can all affect what appears during a walk. Those are limitations to surface, not details to hide behind a polished heat map.

There is also a difference between density and performance. A connection can appear present while still behaving poorly for the task a person cares about. Keeping those measurements legible—and keeping their meaning distinct—is more useful than collapsing every condition into one mysterious score.

Useful, not survey-grade

The 109-second demo captures the interaction: scan the house, measure the network as the scan moves, and use the spatial result to look for dead zones. I built it to locate places worth investigating, not to automate router placement or diagnose every kind of network problem.

That boundary is part of why I like the project. The prototype does one conceptual job well. It connects a problem people describe spatially to a tool that can represent space. RoomPlan makes the house legible to the app; the network measurements give that model a practical layer.

The next time a connection feels weak in one room, “where?” should not be a note I have to keep in my head. It should be part of the data.
