TeslaNav Storage: A Web-Managed Tesla Dashcam USB
I wanted the car to see a USB drive and the owner to see a usable clip browser.

Tesla dashcam footage lives on USB storage, but the moment you want to work with a clip, the storage starts feeling like a handoff instead of a tool. I built TeslaNav Storage around a different interface: the Tesla should still see the device as USB storage, while I should be able to reach a web UI for the clips.
The hardware is a mini-computer. To the car, it appears as the storage device the recording workflow expects. To the person using it, it exposes a browser for finding, downloading, and exporting clips. Those are two very different views of the same underlying job, and the product exists at the boundary between them.
One device, two useful interfaces
Compatibility with the car is the fixed side of the design. TeslaNav Storage has to present itself in the familiar shape of USB storage. A clever dashboard is irrelevant if the Tesla cannot use the device for clips in the first place.
The web side is where the experience can become easier. A clip browser gives the footage a task-oriented interface. Instead of treating the recording as an anonymous file on removable media, the user has a place to browse it and actions for downloading or exporting it.
That distinction explains the hardware choice. TeslaNav Storage is described as a mini-computer rather than a passive drive because it has to support the web experience while still appearing as USB to the car. The launch photo shows the packaged device, and the accompanying video walks through the motivation, the concept, and the working demo.
The useful contract stays simple: Tesla-compatible USB storage on one side and a browser-based clip workflow on the other. That division stays easy to understand. Under the enclosure, both sides still have to agree about when footage is available and safe to touch.
The hard part is respecting both sides
Any device with those two interfaces has a set of unavoidable engineering questions. When can the browser safely read a clip? What happens if the car is writing while someone wants to download? How should the product behave when either side loses power or connectivity? How does it avoid making the convenience layer a risk to the footage it is supposed to preserve?
I judge the device against those questions. Storage products earn trust through boring consistency, and a dashcam clip is often most important precisely when losing it would be unacceptable.
The web UI also needs restraint. “Browse, download, and export” is a strong scope because each verb maps to something people already want to do with footage. It also keeps the daily interaction inside a browser instead of turning every clip retrieval into a removable-drive ritual. The interface does not need to invent a new media library before it makes those basic actions fast and reliable.
Open hardware makes the project inspectable
I released TeslaNav Storage as a fully open-source project with parts lists. Kits were also made available for preorder. That combination gives people more than one entry point: inspect the project, assemble it from the documented parts, or use a kit.
Open sourcing matters especially for a device that sits between a car and its recordings. People can see what they are putting into that workflow rather than treating the enclosure as a black box. It also lets the practical knowledge around compatible parts and physical assembly live with the software.
The launch reached more than 100,000 impressions, but the useful signal was the repeated question underneath the response: people want an easier path from “the Tesla recorded this” to “I have the clip I need.” TeslaNav Storage makes that path available without asking the car to understand anything new.
That is the whole product idea in one sentence: preserve the interface the Tesla expects, then build a better interface for the person who owns the footage. The project and available kits are linked from teslanav.com.
